TAGBILARAN CITY, February 17, (PIA)—Then considered a special holiday for all the schools, February 25, 2016 is now a special non working holiday throughout the country.
Through Proclamation 1071, signed July 15, 2015, President Benigno Aquino assented to the request of the EDSA People's Power Commission to declare February 25, 2016 as a special (non working) holiday throughout the country.
This is in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
EDSA, or more appropriately Epifanio de los Santos Avenue is that long stretch of highway became the venue of a massive gathering of people in 1986, all coming out to prevent the army and the police, from shooting each other and prevent bloody revolution.
Thus called the EDSA People Power Revolution, it is widely claimed that it restored the country's democratic institutions ushering in economic, political and social reforms.
The same revolution has served as an inspiration for the Filipinos everywhere as a nation and as a people.
Because of this, the EDSA Peoples Power Commission finds it fitting and proper that the entire Filipino nation be given the opportunity to observe this milestone in [our] country's history, the proclamation said.
The February 25 is the second holiday for the month.
Last February 8, the country also took a pause for the annual Chinese New Year celebration.
But with February 2016, which is a leap year, daily wage earners still tend to have 19 work days, excluding the holidays. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)
