Bohol’s ‘Asin Tibuok’ to represent C. Visayas in nat’l grassroots innovation expo

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol (PIA) — The Asin Tibuok of Alburquerque town will represent Region 7 in the grassroots innovation category of the National Grassroots Innovation and Circular Economy (GICE) Expo 2025 this November.
This comes after Asin Tibuok, also known as the ‘dinosaur egg salt,’ won first place in the grassroots innovation category during the Regional GICE Expo 2025, organized by the Department of Science and Technology–Central Visayas (DOST-7) on Oct. 29, 2025, in Cebu City.

Presented by Felix Pinlac Jr., the entry bested 11 other semi-finalists and earned the highest score based on the criteria of novelty, relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, and trialability.

Pinlac received a P7,000 cash prize.

Placing second was Jelma Lastimoso’s ‘Manok sa Kawayan’ from San Remigio, Cebu, while the Toledo United Farmers, Fishermen, and Women Workers (TUFFWOW) ranked third with their Organic Feeds innovation.
Asin Tibuok is produced through a centuries-old, labor-intensive salt-making process that involves burning coconut husks, filtering the ash, and boiling seawater in special clay pots to form dense, egg-shaped salt blocks.

In Cebuano, asin means salt, while tibuok means whole, describing its distinct solid form.

The salt is unrefined and additive-free, containing halite (a natural form of sodium chloride), and is known for its smoky, slightly sweet flavor with a noticeable coconut aroma.

Recently, Asin Tibuok was officially registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), recognizing it as a cultural and economic product uniquely linked to Alburquerque’s traditional salt-making heritage.

A GI label certifies a product’s unique qualities and reputation tied to a specific geographic origin and the knowledge and craftsmanship of its local producers. (ECB/PIA7-Bohol)
