TAGBILARAN CITY, June 23 (PIA)--It may not be long before a pure bred "tubaon" (native chicken with red plumage) can be seen in Bohol backyards, this as the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) premier agriculture aquatic and natural resources research and development is now on the third generation of native chicken every Boholano can call their own.
This as a government-led research and development of the truly native chicken is about to release a pure bred native chicken developed from a government research facility in Ubay, Provincial veterinarian Dr. Stella Marie Lapiz said.
This she also bared as she dangles the feasibility of the native chicken industry in Bohol to para-veterinarian volunteers popularly known as Barangay Livestcok Aides (BALA) gathered during their District Congress, June 23-25.
Speaking to Bohol's livestock front liners, Dr. Lapiz explained Bohol Native Chicken Development Program, which aims to make Bohol a leading supplier of good quality native chicken in the Visayas while aiming for the commercialization of native chicken, while she rallied the rural livestock volunteers to make the move for the establishment of the native chicken industry.
Now selling at a good price, native chicken, either sold live or as meat commands high price, said Daisy Basco of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV) who also discussed why the option for native chicken.
Native chicken easily adopts to the environment, has high stress tolerance, commonly found in backyards, can survive on low quality feeds, can reproduce with minimal care and management as well as provides good quality meat and eggs, Basco told the para-veterinarians form 14 towns comprising Bohol's First District.
She also pointed out the palatability, unique flavor, high degree of leanness and meat texture plus its aromatic attribute as that which can make native chicken meat in demand.
A not so focused backyard industry, native chicken in Bohol has now slowly emerged with the technology and the more organized system of product development with the Philippine Council for Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARD) of the DOST looking at their test tubes for the development of a truly Boholano breed of native chicken, revealed Dr. Lapiz to the 450 BALAs convened at the main hall of the Jjs Sea Foods Village.
Moreover, the small but active veterinarian also bared that the native chicken which crossbreeds the native and the bigger breeds at its facility in Roxas Bilar.
Set under the provincial government's food security strategy called Chicken Always Ready in the Yard (ChARITY), the program intends to provide native chicken for food and additional family income, explains Governor Edgar Chatto.
On the program, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV) has identified ten strategies which they hope could mainstream Bohol's Native Chicken Industry. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)
